AI in Mathematics
The Simons Foundation has announced a $15 million effort to help mathematicians navigate the AI era, calling for workshops and other initiatives centered on mathematics in the age of AI (press release shared on Terence Tao’s blog).
Tao’s blog hosts a call (guest post by Deanna Needell and Hayden Schaefer) for mathematicians whose work — prior results and ideas, checked and refined arguments, connections to the existing literature — helped make possible the recent results obtained with AI systems, to share how people and AI actually collaborate in practice.
Terrence Tao has published the slides of his public lecture "Math 2.0" at Caltech: the historical "Math 1.0" state of mathematics, the present moment shaped by the overemphasis on automated solving of open problems by AI, and his vision of a future "Math 2.0" in which AI tools sustain both the mathematical community and the role of mathematical understanding in applying mathematics to the real world.
Fields Medalist Stanislav Smirnov in an interview with Nika Strizhak, on why mathematics is taught in schools, who mathematics favors, and what awaits the field if AI is already outpacing researchers and learning to solve Millennium Problems.
In a guest post on Terrence Tao's blog, Thomas Hales explains how autoformalization, formalization of mathematics by AI, became a practical reality in 2026, and why Lean proofs should be trusted only after kernel verification and a human audit of statement fidelity.
The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) issued a statement in response to OpenAI's October 6 release of a repository of manuscripts purporting to solve a number of high-profile problems. The statement rejects OpenAI's claim that the release advances mathematics and urges mathematicians to discontinue work with OpenAI and return to a vision of science centered on human understanding.
In a guest post on Terrence Tao's blog, Ben Antieau announces Hexagon, a new community repository for research in the mathematical sciences and theoretical computer science, aimed at results produced with LLM assistance. It offers citable, long-term storage with a lower submission barrier than the arXiv, including works generated entirely by LLMs. The project is backed by the newly created Hexagon Mathematics Foundation.
In a guest post on Terrence Tao's blog, Matthew Colbrook presents AIM, an initiative to create a community-led opportunity for mathematical exploration. The team has compiled a list of open problems in applied mathematics with precise statements, motivation, and references, and invites mathematicians to share problems, solutions, and explanations, with or without AI.
Stephen Wolfram writes about the possible future of pure mathematics research in the age of artificial intelligence.
Terence Tao writes about SAIR's (Simons Agency for International Research) initiative to create an open model for mathematics.
A statement by 25 Fields Medalists arguing that AI companies' push to solve major mathematical problems is severely misaligned with the goals of mathematics and the mathematical community (Math and AI).
Terence Tao proposes building a broad, community-contributed list of resources on artificial intelligence in mathematics: statements and analysis, opinions and community discussion, and existing resource collections. Readers add links in the blog comments; the post points to collections such as Northwestern's AI+Mathematics Resources and Proofs and Prompts.
An episode of The Joy of Why podcast (University of Washington), recorded live at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2026): on the role, purpose, and relevance of mathematics in the age of artificial intelligence.
A talk on artificial intelligence in mathematics.
A lecture by Terence Tao on the application of artificial intelligence in mathematics.
A declaration on the role of artificial intelligence in mathematical research, prepared by a working group of mathematicians following a 2025 conference at Leiden University and endorsed by the International Mathematical Union (IMU).
